Memories of Mega Man 5: Oh No My Brother. You've got to buy your own!by Protoman Blues
For the record, I love that line from the Hey Love commercial! Anyway, onto the review. Here we are at Mega Man 5. Mega Man doesn't know the meaning of the word quit. Once again, we have yet another Mega Man game in the Classic Series. Not quite as ground breaking as Mega Man 2, 3, or even 4, but still one of the best games in the Mega Man series. All I know is that in the year 20XX, a vicious army of robots is bent on destroying the world!!. And behind this destruction is....
PROTOMAN!? As in, my namesake, ProtoMan? GASP! He's behind the latest wave of chaos and destruction? Something's not right here. That's not the ProtoMan I know! Or is it? Regardless, not only is he bringing destruction to our fair planet, but he also has kidnapped Dr. Light. No way can our hero let that stand. It seems ProtoMan was busy as well, building 8 new Robot Masters to challenge the Blue Bomber with. The evil 8 in this game are GravityMan, GyroMan, CrystalMan, NapalmMan, StoneMan, ChargeMan, WaveMan, and StarMan.
As you've guessed, the same classic pattern of Boss Weapon = Another Robot Master's weakness still applies in this game, just like pretty much every other Mega Man game. Now, I was a huge fan of Charge Kick and Gravity Hold, however I've noticed that around the time of this game, the Boss Weapons just don't seem to do much for me anymore, except for destroying the Robot Masters with them. It could be one of two things...
#1. They're just not as powerful as they use to be, or as good either.
#2. It's because your old nemesis Dr. Cossack decided to help upgrade your Mega Buster!
After his daughter was saved from the clutches of the dastardly Dr. Wily, Dr. Cossack decided to use his genious to help mankind. Granted, he hasn't built any more Robot Masters, but he has been helping out Dr. Light with a couple of projects. The first project, as I mention up above, is the improvement of Mega Man's Mega Buster. Losing the glowing green and blue charge, Mega Man now shines with a blueish black charge along with a bigger, more powerful, and cooler looking charge shot! (It even sounds more powerful too) The Mega Buster was so powerful, that I've never really used the Boss Weapon's in the game anymore, except to defeat other Robot Masters. Even with the Robot Masters, it's still just as easy to defeat them with the Mega Buster. However, this all new, all powerful Mega Buster just didn't seem like enough offense for Mega Man, Dr. Cossack thought. So, onto the next project!
Dr. Cossack and Dr. Light were working together on this project, if my memory is correct. From now on, Mega Man would have a helpful Robotic Bird at his side, whose name was Beat. First Rush, then Fliptop, and now Beat. It's always nice to have help when you're fighting for everlasting peace! However, Beat is not yet finished. He requires 8 Special Tokens which are on the Robot Master stages. They just so happen to spell out M E G A M A N V too. If you collect all of them, Beat will be complete. When summoned, your new robotic bird will attack every enemy in Mega Man's path and kill indiscriminately! Again, Mega Man just needed some more offense to go along with his new Mega Buster.
Speaking of helpers, Fliptop once again makes an appearance to give you that Weapon Energy Capsule when you so desperately needed health. Rush is back as well, however he's been neutered and has lost his ability to transform into the Rush Marine. As I've said in previous reviews, the Rush Marine was only useful on at the most 1 or 2 stages. However, I will still miss it. Also, he now looks different when he uses his Rush Coil (probably from the neutering). The Rush Jet is still the same as in Mega Man 4, so no changes there. Not to fall victim to having no new items, Mega Man gets the Super Arrow, which is just a arrow which sticks to walls, allowing Mega Man to jump onto the arrow. Having said that, I still miss Mega Man 3 Rush Jet, which makes all of these items useless! Well, lets get back to the story.
Ah HA! Two ProtoMan's! I knew my namesake wouldn't betray his brother. Looks like Dr. Wily is up to his old tricks again. He created DarkMan (not to be confused with a regular Robot Master) to frame ProtoMan. What an elaborate scheme. So elaborate, that once again you have to go through 2 Castles. It seems that Dr. Wily is loaded with cash, in order to build 2 Castles for our hero to fight through. Again, I like the 2 castle scenario, as it makes the game longer. Sadly though, there is only 1 theme per castle now, unlike the previous Mega Man games. I was not terribly happy with this, except for the fact that I absolutely love the ProtoMan Castle Theme! Speaking of the music, it's not quite as good as the previous Mega Man games. Out of all the NES Mega Man games, it's the weakest, in my opinion. Some honorable mentions are NapalmMan Stage and WaveMan Stage. Once again, go to Atomic-Fire to download these themes, if you so desire.
Once again, Dissapearing Wily makes a comeback. Even though this trick didn't work the last time, Dr. Wily thought he would try it again. Sadly, he just won't learn for the next few games. Overall, this is one of the easiest Mega Man games ever made. With the addition of Beat, your more powerful Mega Buster, and the M Tank which replenish all of your Weapon Energy at once, this game is extremely simple to beat. At least, it was for me anyway.
Well, that does it for this review. Again, this is one of the easiest Mega Man games to date, but it's still a great game in my eyes. Could I just be saying that cause ProtoMan's trademark Yellow Scarf is lying on the ground in the title? It's possible! But again, my fellow Mega Maniacs, I love all of the Classic Series games as they make me want to Fight For Everlasting Peace!
Thank You For Playing!
